How to Get Discounted Prescription Medications

Hey girl I know it can be frustrating why do some pharmacies charge more than others for the SAME medication? And depending on your prescription insurance coverage you can be stuck with one pharmacy. And you can still have a high co-pay on medications you have insurance coverage on… I know it all to well. Confession, it can be equally frustrating as the medical provider to work through it all. But, I have a few solutions you can use to navigate the frustration of prescription medication costs. Here are my Pro-Tips that I used regularly 😊 Oh sorry, let me get our coffee and we can jump into it!

1.      Discount Medication Lists

  • Walmart and Target both have $4 and $10 generic lists.

  • Pro-Tip: These lists change frequently so do a quick google search to get the most up to date.

2.      Online Discount Coupons

Services like Good RX, WellRx, and RxSaver have great coupons that cost less than cash price and depending on your prescription insurance coverage may beat that price as well.

Simply search your medication name and specific strength. For example, Amoxicillin 250 mg or 500 mg tablets. Then search by pharmacy. It is important you use the coupon specific for the pharmacy you intend on using. You can text or email the coupon to your self to show the pharmacy when you pick up your medication to claim your discount.

  • Pro-Tip: make sure you have the BIN, PCN, Group, and Member ID associated with the coupon. The pharmacy will need this information to process the coupon.

3.      Rx Savings Clubs

Some grocery store chains offer Rx Savings Clubs as an annual fee discount prescription program and I am a huge fan!

One in particular is Kroger:

Individual membership for just $36 per year. Family plan (up to 6 people, including pets) is only $72 annually.

With savings costs of Free, $3, or $6 price range.

Like I said, BIG fan!!

4.      Manufacture’s coupons

These are most useful for newer medications that do not yet have a generic versions. Because they are brand name medications and cost more the manufacture’s will post prescription discounts on their website to encourage the use of the medication. You can also ask your medical provider for manufacturer coupons. Hopefully a drug rep has dropped off some coupons for their patient’s to use.

Let me refill my coffee real quick and I will gladly jump into your questions.

Oh, I made some fresh banana muffins, my fav… want one?

To answer your question, yes. So even if you have prescription medication coverage and your insurance requires you to use a specific pharmacy you can still send a prescription to a pharmacy of your choice and choose not to use insurance but instead a cash price with the use of a discount program or coupon. AND use our HSA or FSA card for the purchase!

What do you think about the muffins? Sometimes I add cinnamon for a little extra :)

I hope these Pro-Tips get you back to what’s most important, FAMILY.

I would love to hear any questions you have, drop me a note I can’t wait!
